Chapter 2 GALILEO Workstation Use Policy
Responsible Office: Director of Libraries
Originally issued: 1995
GALILEO workstations are available in the Robert B. Greenblatt Library for use by faculty, staff, and students at Georgia Health Sciences University, and for faculty, staff, and students affiliated with any other University System of Georgia institution. In addition, GALILEO workstations are available for public use. This policy describes procedures for using the GALILEO workstations in the Greenblatt Library, including identification of the users, and describes the information that can be accessed on the workstations.
Reason For Policy
GALILEO is an initiative of the University System of Georgia (USG) and is funded by the Governor and the General Assembly for the Citizens of Georgia. GALILEO workstations are provided so that the public can access GALILEO services and information resources that support the curriculum and research activities of USG institutions. The Robert B. Greenblatt Library has established this policy so that its GALILEO workstations are readily and easily accessible for information retrieval by all library users.
Entities Affected By This Policy
Faculty, staff, and students of Georgia Health Sciences University and all other USG institutions, as well as other citizens in the State of Georgia are affected by this policy.
Who Should Read This Policy
All persons, including faculty, staff, and students of Georgia Health Sciences University and all other USG institutions, as well as all other citizens in the State of Georgia who wish to use the GALILEO workstations located in the Robert B. Greenblatt Library, should read this policy.

Board of Regents GALILEO Access Policies:
These definitions apply to these terms as they are used in this policy:
|GALILEO||Georgia Library Learning Online|
GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online, an initiative of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. A World Wide Web-based virtual library, GALILEO provides access to multiple information resources, including secured access to licensed products. Participating institutions may access over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals.
GALILEO seeks to provide equal access to information for all Georgia citizens; the goal is to improve library services for all Georgia citizens. No matter where a citizen lives in the state of Georgia, a library nearby provides access to GALILEO. For this reason, all GALILEO participating libraries, whether public or private, excluding schools (K-12), must provide some kind of access to GALILEO for the public, whether through open access to all library facilities, limited access to designated workstations, or other means.
- Georgia Health Sciences University visitors use GALILEO workstations located across from the Library Information Desk.
- Each visitor signs in on the guest registration sheet.
- Each visitor must view and agree to the computer use statement listed on the screen:
This computer is intended for use as an accessing point to the state funded GALILEO system. On occasion, the computer may be used for other public or research functions. You are not allowed to download any software or change any computer settings.
- Greenblatt Library staff log the visitor onto the GALILEO workstation with the designated public password.
The responsibilities each party has in connection with Academic Affairs Policy 8.02, GALILEO Workstation Use Policy, are:
|MCG visitor||Use computer resources for research and general information purposes.Agree to follow computer use statement.|
|Greenblatt Library staff||Assist patrons with finding appropriate health information resources.|
