Chapter 0102 Food & Water Restriction Policy
Responsible Office: Laboratory Animal Services
Originally issued: 12/4/2004
Restriction of food or water to research animals for research purposes must be scientifically justified and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and a program to monitor the physiological and behavioral indices of the animals must be established.
Reason For Policy
Animal Welfare Act Policy 11 has specific criteria for limiting food or water intake in animals to ensure their well-being. Failure to follow these federal guidelines can result in civil penalties and may include cease and desist orders, fines, and license suspension or revocation. Therefore, the Division of Laboratory Animal Services has established this policy, which contains the procedures to be used when investigators request restriction of food or water to research animals.
Entities Affected By This Policy
Anyone working with laboratory animals that has an approved Animal Use Protocol stating that food or water will be restricted in animals are affected by this policy.
Who Should Read This Policy
Faculty, staff, students, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants and associates, and any other personnel involved with using animals in research should know and observe this policy.

The Animal Welfare Act has specific criteria for limiting food or water intake of laboratory animals to ensure their well-being. The method of food and water deprivation must be humane and safe. Procedures for food or water restriction are outlined below.
- At a minimum, daily logs of food or water intake should be maintained and body weight recorded at least once a week. Criteria will be set by the attending veterinarian for early removal of animals from the study.
- Special attention should be given to ensure animals are consuming a balanced diet.
The responsibilities each party has in connection with Academic, Research, and Student Affairs Policy 9.0102, Food & Water Restriction Policy, are:
|Investigator||Maintain daily logs of food or water intake.Record body weight at least weekly.|
|Veterinarian||Will determine if animals need to be removed from research study due to food or water restriction.|
